SILVER HALLMARKS CAN BE A MINEFIELD ! I HAVE FOUND A VERY GOOD WEB PAGE FOR HALLMARKS , WHERE YOU WILL FIND MOST OF THE HALLMARKS OF THE WORLD. SO TYPE IN THE 3 Ws FOLLOWED BY : .925-1000.COM .  On offer from England is this amazing antique sterling silver  trophy loving cup and cover bearing the hallmarks  for  Sheffield 1896  and the makers mark of  James Dixon & Sons. In addition to their mark , Dixons have added their trademark bugle with banner , seen just under the hallmarks.     The trophy is of very good size and  weight .  The overall height is   13.25 " , the diameters are , base ,  5.75 " , cup top 6.4 " and the handle width is  11.75 " . The  weight is 1750  grams ,   56.27  troy ounces.    The design is  superb , the whole an extravagant pleasure to behold.  The trophy  bears so many wonderful aspects of design that it is difficult to know where to start !  The top is as good a place as any , and also the most obvious ......   the lid finial is loosely based on the crest of the Kingdom of Scotland , which became defunct in 1707 . The Red Lion of the King of Scots  sits on top of the Crown of Scotland .  Missing only the usual crown on its head , this lion carries , as in the original crest , the Sceptre and Sword of State  of Scotland.  I suspect that the man who commissioned this trophy loving cup in 1896 wanted to pay homage to his roots , but did not feel he could exactly copy the crest and therefore left off the crown on the lions head.  The lid has gadrooning to the upper part embellished with oblique ribbon and tassled decoration . There are beautiful curving foliar swags around the lid rim , making the  whole a most impressive display . The lid sits on a deep cup of great beauty . The upper part is a mass of superb repousse decoration depicting floral and foliar motifs , stippling and broad swags , all  making a magical feast for the eye. On each side of the cup body is a garlanded cartouche , one bearing the crest of a boar's head and the other the scripted letter A . The quality of the engraving is of the highest order.  I am assuming that this celebrates a wedding ;  the boar's head is no doubt the crest of he who commissioned the piece , the A that of his lady wife . From our useful friend Google I find that the BOARS HEAD COUPED ( cut off at the neck )  was used by many Scottish families as their crest . Separating this upper part from the gadrooned lower half is an applied band of simple, effective lands. The gadrooning is embellished to match that on the lid  with oblique ribbon and tasseled decoration. The stem is short as expected on a trophy of these dimensions, and the whole sits on a spreading base  decorated with foliar curving swags to match those beauties on the lid.The handles are as impressive as you would expect  . Made to a classical C scroll form , they have leaf capping to the upper part and gently taper down to finish in a reverse curl with scrolled ends and thumb piece terminals. This very heavy and large trophy loving cup is a great tribute to the skill and artistry of  both designer and silversmith. It is also a tribute to the man who chose to almost exactly copy the crest of the Kingdom of Scotland !  The whole is in EXCELLENT  CONDITION and is beautifully polished ready to go on display.  For your guidance , I use the words " EXCELLENT CONDITION " only if it is ........., " GOOD CONDITION " to indicate that there are no serious condition problems , but that there may be surface blemishes such as light discolouration , minor dings , dents or scratches commensurate with the age of the piece.............. I use the words " REASONABLE CONDITION " to indicate that there are blemishes and dings ,dents, creases , scratches , ripples etc . Under this condition category I will always qualify such defects , but please ask if you want any clarifcation of damages to any given piece. The best way to check the quality of my stock offered on Ebay , my descriptions , packaging and general service is to read my feedback . I am very good ( and modest ! ) but don't take my word , read what other buyers have to say about me.  SHIPPING TO ANY COUNTRY Due to the weight and size of this trophy loving cup , shipping and handling to the USA will be by Parcelforce  Global   Priority Service , advertised as a three day service.
