Description
Current Lot Pair of George II de Lamerie Silver Covers A remarkable and regal pair of oval meat dish covers, once the focal points of a noble service of "plate" designed to grace the finest sideboard of an elegant age, when English silversmithing was at a high point of craftsmanship and design. Pairs of meat dishes of early Georgian origin are rarely encountered. This neo-classical presentation is superbly decorated with boldly engraved, matching armorials with crown surmount, and well-marked with conforming punches on the rim and handle. The hallmarks are for London, 1737, and the maker's mark (partially rubbed on the rims but clear on the handle), is a distinctive "P.L." attributed to Paul de Lamerie, England's best known and most collectable Hugeonot silversmith of the day. A lot worthy of any Georgian silver collection, and robust enough for another 250 years of service. Exceptional, original condition. Length 15-1/2". Weight 70.90 ozt. each. (2)
