Description
Current Lot George III Silver Tureen and Later Cover 1782 An exquisitely made and grandly decorated soup tureen by the London silversmiths Rebecca Emes and Edward Barnard, made during the War of Independence. Featuring hinged handles with lion's head terminals, massive paw feet with shell terminals, applied scrollwork and cartouches (unengraved), this is the luxury model of Georgian silver tureens. The clearly struck and preserved marks are for London, 1782, centering the maker's mark. It was not uncommon to find female silversmiths active in London at the time. Many were widows who continued their husband's craft, including Rebecca Emes, widow of silversmith John Emes. The tureen has been fitted with a complimentary silver cover of high quality but later vintage, featuring an elaborate handle of oak branch and leaves. The result is a happy marriage. Cover is unmarked beyond a leopard's head struck to the rim. Length 14". Overall weight 154.50 ozt.
