Description
Current Lot 1710 Queen Anne Monteith Punch Bowl Silver of this early period is decidedly rare, and usually found in the form of small items such as spoons or sugar casters. We present a magnificent centerpiece, suitable for the finest tables of Queen Anne's time as any time in the ensuing three centuries. Named for the Earl of Monteith (ed add here.Nick), the bowl presents as a crown, with (detachable) scalloped rim intended for holding glasses. Punch, typically an undrinkable concoction today, was immensely popular and skillfully made in Britain from the Middle Ages until the early 20th century, when cocktails became a fashionable alternative. The Monteith is fully and clearly marked on both elements, and presents superbly, including a pair of swing handles hinged on gargoyle terminals. The two oval cartouches are attractively engraved with a crest featuring a winged griffin atop a Baronet's chevron. Diameter 11-1/2". Weight 65 oz.
