IMPORTANT c1830 A.E. WARNER COIN SILVER COVERED BUTTER DISH; LAVISHLY REPOUSSED SCROLLING FLORALS ON PEBBLED GROUND; NATURALISTIC TWIG AND LEAF FORM HANDLES; ACANTHUS AND FLOWER CAP STYLIZED PAW FEET; ORIGINAL LINER; NEAR PRISTINE; 24 OUNCES This is a beautifully designed and meticulously hand crafted c1830 American coin silver covered butter dish. Retaining its original pierced interior liner. From one of the most important Baltimore silversmiths of his time, Andrew Ellicott Warner. Born 1786. First listed with brother Thomas in 1805. Served as a Captain in the War of 1812. Gained significant recognition in the Great Lake campaigns and defense of Baltimore in 1814. Following the war, Thomas became the first assayer of Baltimore. Warner returned to crafting fine gold and silver. Commissioned for many important presentation swords, medals and tea services. Including a presentation service in 1817 for Commodore Stephen Decatur. This museum worthy Warner covered butter dish meticulously executed in raised circular design. Lavishly repoussed scrolling floral decoration. An array of flowers, many in full bloom. Set against finest hand hammered, stippled background. Like satin to the touch. Boldly fashioned twig and leaf form handles. The gnarled, striated twig surface as real to the touch. Retains the original pierced, six petal leaf interior liner. Well fit. Tall "bee-hive" domed floral cover. Equally well fit to base. Topped with the original, beautifully carved raised flower, on three leaf and stem finial. Rich, hand chased finish detail. The butter dish supported upon elegant acanthus and flower cap stylized paw feet. Never monogrammed. This extremely rare, c1830 A.E. Warner coin silver butter dish is 6 3/4 inches handle to handle and 6 inches tall. Exceptionally thick, heavy guage solid silver construction, 24 ounces. Crisp, well struck hallmarks to underside "A.E. Warner 11/8". The identical hallmark illustrated in Ensko page 236. Excellent condition. Near pristine. Rich, lustreous silver patina throughout. The beautifully carved scrolling floral decoration retains much of it original cirsp, vibrant hand chased detail. Stands firm on table or tray. Cover closes perfectly to base. So often the lids are mis-shapen and ill fit with the butter dish form. For the discerning collector of the finest 19th century American hand crafted silver. A museum worthy, c1830 A.E. Warner coin silver repoussed floral and leaf handled butter dish, with original liner. In excellent, near pristine condition. Never monogrammed.
