Military Regimental dedication. Made London, England, 1830 by John Linnit.  Measures 3.25 inches long. Weighs 195 grams/ 6.29 tory oz.  Rectangular box with waisted sides. Engine turned top, bottom and sides with exceptional border trim on lid with modelled acorns and oak leaves, showing fabulous detail. The latch / frontspiece relief modelled with a central rose in full bloom, thistles, clover and foliage. Again marvellous detail and execution. The top of the lid outside features a sculpted Greyhound dog in repose. The inside of the lid is engraved with a military dedication: PRESENTED TO LT COLL JAMES SHERRIFF BY THE OFFICERS OF THE BOMBAY EUROPEAN REG AS A TOKEN OF THEIR ESTEEM AND REGARD JANUARY 28TH 1831.  A gold box with identical acorn-oak border, also by John Linnit can be found in the book Gold Boxes Superb Examples of the GOldsmith's Art by Geza von Habsburg-Lothringen, box #34, page 73.  Marks are: Monarch head in profile for George IV, date letter q for 1830; leopard head for London, lion passant and maker's mark JL for John Linnit. We found records of this box selling as 22k gold a number of years ago. We bought it as gilt-washed silver with 22k gold trim/borders. We tested the sides for 22carat gold, but according to the marks believe it to be gilt-silver with gold trim.   Please see my other items for auction on Ebay.
