Chinese Export Silver Box Signed ' Description 19th c. Chinese Silver Box PrivateCollection Offering This lot consists of a highly decorative antique 19th century Chinese export silver box. It measures approx. 3-¾ of an inch long, 2-1/8 of an inch deep and stands 1-3/8 of an inch tall (9.4cm x 6.3cm x3.5cm). It weighs approx. 4.55 ounces or 129 grams. The bottom of the box is stamped with Chinese characters along with the numbers “0 900“. The box tested positive for around 900 silver content in an acid test. The top and sides of the box are expertly worked with elaborate repose’ silver work with hand chased and under carved details. The top of the box is decorated with images of cranes and magpies amidst flowering prunus branches (in the plum or apricot family). The smaller bird with the cocked tail is a magpie and the larger a heron or crane. The magpie is a symbol of happiness and the crane longevity. The flowering prunus branches represent beauty and marital bliss. The box with all of its symbolism was most likely originally presented as a wedding gift. The box is in good overall condition with minimal surface wear and no dents or damage. The hinge works smoothly and the box closes securely. Some tarnish or patina to the surface consistent with age.
