The Diana's head mark began use in 1867 and the city of assay letter mark began use as of 1872. The shape of the cartouche indicates that this piece has a minimum of 800 parts silver and the letter A next to the head indicates the city of Vienna. The maker's initials of 'CW" appear next to the head mark - I was unable to find the name of the maker. The piece features the figure of a Greek "goddess" figure, holding a lyre in one hand and a laurel wreath in the other. This is probably artistic license, as those items are symbols used by the Greek god Apollo - very attractive figure nevertheless. The form of the candleholder is very attractive and features wonderful style and engraved detailing overall. The piece measures 8 ½" in height and 8 1/8" in width - it weighs 8.4 oz. It is in very good condition with no dents or wear, but the base is "out of round" and therefore, the piece sits unevenly and is wobbly. A qualified silversmith or jeweler would be able to easily put this right. The only other "defect" that I can see is that the engraved shield at the front of the base is a little off-center - this shouldn't bother anyone too greatly.
