Description
Chinese Apothecary Jar Late Tang Early Song Dynasty 618-906/960-1279 A beautiful 100% in-situ example of an early Chinese Apothecary Jar. This wonderful jar will date from the late Tang Dynasty (618-906) to the early Song Dynasty (960-1279). It is in perfect condition for its age, approximately 1,000 years old, with all the right wear, mineralization, iridescence and natural crazing consistent with a Tang/Song Dynasty glazed pottery jar. The jar was made in two separate coiled halves, top and bottom, that were joined and then glazed. Note the old indented bottom-part late Tang-part early Song. Interestingly, the jar was glazed twice; the first glaze of a cream or light caramel color was covered later with what appears to be a true white Tang Dynasty glaze. Both glazes show iridescence & abrasion, and both glaze and clay show consistent soil penetration from long time burial. There are no hairlines, cracks, or chips. The jar is 5-1/2" high and 6" in diameter. This wonderful artifact comes from the collection of a well-known Tucson collector, authenticator, and appraiser, Fred Gumbart. Fred has been a guest speaker on the PBS History Detectives television series. You may view this item, or any of our other antiquities, fine art or artifacts at our gallery, by appointment only.
