Description
Asian Art and AntiquesMuseum QualityGenuine Chinese Han DynastyFunerary Grain Jar Red Pottery with Lead Green Glaze2nd C. BC to 2nd C. ADA magnificent Han Dynasty funerary grain jar.  The jar is made from reddish pottery and is glazed with a classic lead green glaze.  The glaze is silvered and highly iridescent in places from prolonged burial.  The piece is sturdy  and globular and has broad shoulders which gradually slope inward to a flat base.  The top of the jar has a well trimmed rim at the mouth and the remains of three spurs for supporting pieces fired above this piece in the kiln.  Similarly, the bottom of the piece shows the remains of three spurs (which are partly covered by felt protective dots).  The spur on top of the rim has cut into the lip of the rim and has the appearance of a chip.  There is another chip below the lip of the rim.  Otherwise the jar is free from cracks and other blemishes. The jar is 5 inches high (12.5 cm) and 5 1/2 inches (14 cm) wide at the shoulders. The glaze is positively fantastic in the way that it transitions from a deep forest green and silvers to a wonderful iridescence - the kind of coloration that only comes from prolonged burial and which is typical of Han Chinese lead-glazed pottery and ancient Syrian and Roman glass.  There is a faint smell of soil on the interior of the jar.The base of the piece exhibits the classic chord-cut rings that come from the clay being freed from the potter's wheel by a string or chord - very typical of Han and Tang pottery jars, and not typically seen on later pieces.  (The previous owner's inventory mark is on the base of the piece, but can be easily removed with acetone or nail polish remover.)This piece was purchased from a very reliable dealer in Chinese antique ceramics in Okayama, Japan in 1998.  It is absolutely authentic and is most definitely not a modern copy of an antique Han piece.Truly a wonderfully ancient and flamboyantly colorful example of ancient Chinese pottery.Shipping and insurance is included - anywhere in the world.*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *Returns: In same condition, will be refunded.   Returns must be postmarked within 7 days of receipt.  Payment for auction must be made within 7 days, via Pay Pal.  Items will be shipped as soon as payment is confirmed.
