Description
For auction we offer two very large hand-carved bamboo brush pots, made in China a very long time ago. These oriental pots are a real pair. The exquisite carvings on each pot are a mirror image of the carving on the other pot. The carving has been done on the front of each pot only and you can see two groups of China men (one group in the top half and another in the bottom half) playing or working, with an old man in a hut overlooking the figures in the bottom half, all surrounded by trees and leaves. The patina on the carved section of these pots is a rich warm "oaky" brown, the backs are still original bamboo colour. The carving is quite deep into the bamboo; the background is cut away at different depths. In the top half, you can see five very fine upright tree trunks, where you can actually run a piece of paper behind, giving a three dimensional picture of the group of people. The detail of the carving is extremely precise, albeit primitive; you can even see the men's moustaches!! These pots are authentic - this quality of carving by hand cannot be replicated by machine. It is all too fine and too precisely done. These brushpots are very large, but not of even height. The larger pot on the left is 32cm high; the one on the right only 31cm. Being made from a natural product, the pots are not quite round and their diameters vary between 10-11-12cm. The weight of the larger pot is 790 grammes; the smaller one only 730 grammes. These pots are antique and are offered for auction from our own collection in a fairly good condition considering their age. The larger pot shows a several cracks in the bamboo, which has dried out too much with the aid of central heating. These cracks run the complete length of the pot; one crack appears to have been filled in the past, but opened up again, also affecting the base of the pot, which is slightly cracked too. Due to the cracking, a section of approx. 2cm on the side of this pot is quite loose, but not detached and undoubtably repairable. The few water spots we see should also easily be rectified, if you know how to. The smaller pot is near perfect, be it somewhat wobbly, with only the beginning of a few small bamboo cracks on the right hand uncarved side of the pot. All the above is mentioned for absolute accuracy for the potential bidder. We will carefully pack these pots for posting and endeavour to keep the weight under 2kg in which case we quote £10 for special delivery. If the weight is over 2kg we quote first class recorded also at £10. We prefer personal cheques in sterling, but will accept Paypal despite their very high costs.  Please feel free to email us with any questions or requests for further photos.
