Description
Army 1934 Shin-Guntô - W.W. II Japanese Regulation pattern Army officers sword, or shin-guntô- This is the most familiar of all Japanese Imperial Army swords, which is commonly referred to as "shin-guntô", and in Japan sometimes as "Rikugun-guntô" (army sword). While we normally don't sell such items we sometimes come across such swords as part of an old family's inheritance, as indeed it wasn't uncommon to use an ancestral sword with Pacific Conflict era fittings. Even simple samurai families may have had a sword come down to them, unsigned, but nevertheless proudly kept in the family.About this shin-gunto:- As the military collector will be mostly interested in the fitting, we have included numerous photos of details of these. Firstly, let's begin that saying that the overall condition is very good, not mint, but very good. The hilt is complete, with original military green lacing, The kabuto-gane (pommel) has a cord sarute (knot loop), and on both sides of the hilt, Army-style gilded menuki (ornaments) decorated with sakura and leaves.- The tsuba (guard) is the classic "aoi" shape associated with this sword pattern. It is cast brass, and is known as "aoi" due to its hollyhock shape. Decorations consists of four raised sakura on each side and a stippled background decoration. There is a hole on one side for the retaining pin. The thickness is 7.5mm the gilded surface is in overall quite good condition.- The tsuba and all four seppa (spacers) have the same manufacturer's matching numbers. The scabbard, is the classic shin-gunto painted (matt green) steel type, with ashi, or suspension mount, throat, a decorative strengthening band (shibabiki) and chape (ishizuke). The throat and chape are decorated in the same style as the hilt fittings. The ashi consists of 2 bands surmounted by a kadosakura and boss, through which pass a brass ring. Except for 2 small chips in the paint, the entire scabbard is excellent (original) condition.- The sword:- Nagasa: 69cm- Sori: 1.6- Mekugi-ana: 1- Hamon: sugu; Hada: while at first glance it seems to be muji, looking very closely with a magnifying glass it appears more like itame with some ko-nie above the hamon. No chips, or cracks on the entire length. Unsigned.
