IMPORTANT c1790 WILLIAM G. FORBES COIN SILVER TEAPOT; CLASSIC OVAL FORM; NEO-CLASSICAL INSPIRED BRIGHT CUT ENGRAVED DECORATION; RAISED URN FINIAL; HAND CARVED HANDLE; SIGNED "W.G. FORBES" AND TRADEMARKS; 21 OUNCES We are quite pleased to offer this museum worthy c1790 American coin silver teapot. From the most important New York City silversmith of his time, William Garret Forbes (1751-1840). Freeman in 1773. Member of the Gold & Silversmiths Society 1786. Listed at 88 Broadway from 1773-1789. Joined the Mechanics Institute 1802. Listed with son Garett 1805-1809. Four sons, three became master silversmiths. Forbes's silver wares graces important private and institutional collections worldwide. Several of his works are displayed in the Museum of the City of New York. Including a near identical bright cut engraved, oval and urn finial teapot. From our personal collection. One of the oldest examples of American silver we own. Now offered on Ebay. The teapot masterfully executed in classic oval design. Elegant leaf and floral, bright cut engraved decoration throughout. Recessed bead, stitch, and double wavy line bright cut border detail. Centre with leaf and floral frame, shield form medallions, both sides. Three double "circle" and tied streaming tassle displays. Ending in the three flared at end and cascading from centre. Gradual step in shoulder to well crafted recessed cover. Raised centre, with gentle overhang. Cover topped with classic raised urn form finial, on stepped oval pedestal base. Long, sweeping swan's neck spout, with "open mouth" cut out end. Beautifully carved C-scroll handle, moulded thumb piece. Long sleeve and spread oval terminals. The teapot supported upon gently flared oval base, bright cut engraved detail. "ELH" (?) monogram one side only. This elegant, c1790 William Garret Forbes teapot 11 1/2 inches handle to spout 7 1/2 tall, weighs 21 ounces. Less handle. Excellent condition. Near pristine. Appears little, if ever used. Rich, lustreous silver patina throughout. Stands perfectly firm on table or serving tray. The elegant bright cut engraved leaf and floral decoration retains most all of its original crisp, vibrant detail. Handle secure and retains a warm, even patina. Interior completely free of discoloration. Well struck hallmarks to underside. "W G Forbes" eagle and second Forbe's trademark. This identical hallmark is illustrated in Ensko page 339.
