The town of Heriz is one of the oldest and the most fertile areas of the province. Important religious and historic places in the area include: • Sheikh Ishaaq Tomb • Maneeq Grave The Town of Heriz and the surrounding villages are internationally well-known for the good quality and very beautiful carpets produced there. The majority of their rugs are woven basically by same technique as the Mongols' who overtook Heriz in the 13th century used. Heriz rugs and carpets are valued for their artistic quality not only in Iran, but all around the world. The small town of Heriz is the center of the weaving areas in Azerbaijan and is known to be one of the most important production centers. Carpets from the town's workshops are of better quality than those from the remote mountain villages. A Heriz uses a unique medallion as a main distinguishing characteristic. Old and antique examples, in various blue tones, are occasionally found in the trade and at auctions. The tribal Heriz is a thicker, heavier carpet, renowned for its earth tones and geometric patterns. The colors are made from root and vegetable dyes. Heriz silk carpets are exquisitely knotted and are both rare and very beautiful. The designs of old Heriz rugs differ radically from those of new pieces. The majority of newer, Heriz rugs and carpets have a large, single, eight-sided medallion. While older pieces are very simple in design, newer pieces will be decorated with flowers, twines, and vases in which the background is densely decorated. In addition, you will also find some tribal patterns that are made in surrounding villages such as Goravan. The quality of Heriz rugs and carpets can vary. Older, antique Heriz carpets woven before 1900 are called Serapi and are known to be of excellent quality. Serapi are very valuable and sought after. Heriz rugs and carpets vary in size but, it is more common to find them from mid-sizes to larger dimensions. Antique Heriz pieces will have the following colors: blues, turquoises, brown, and beiges. Newer pieces will consist of: reds, browns, and light blues. Blues and blacks are used as contrasting and contour colors. Newer carpets tend to be rather inharmoniously colored. A Heriz is made of a soft wool and has a thin, tight pile. Heriz rugs and carpets have a cotton warp; the weft can be made of wool and on occasion silk. Weavers in Heriz use Turkish knots. Heriz rugs and carpets are the most popular and attractive tribal patterned pieces among western collectors. The Persian rug is a tradition that has survived for a period of over 2500 years. Each Persian rug is a new flower blossoming from one  of the biggest branches of an ancient and colorful yet damaged tree which is the Persian culture . Persian people are very tradition oriented and this characteristic can be seen in the way they make their rugs . Each village or city in Iran has an ancient and traditional rug pattern that has been maintained in that region for centuries and sometimes millenniums. The distinct designs of each city are particular to that city alone and although famous designs have been imitated elsewhere in the country a few times , they have never been duplicated. Iran is also the place where many other styles of rugs are made, such as Turkish, Caucasian, Armenian, Kazak, Afghanistan & India. The Persian rug is a big chapter in the book of Iran's culture because it visually shows the biggest obsessions in Persian culture, which are the beauty of nature, literature, and true love. These are what make the Persian rug on of the most prestigious things to be placed in any home. Persian Bazaar - Rug's World Headquarter   KPSI: ( knot per Square inch ) the number of knots per linear inch along the warp and the weft tell us what is the KPSI in one rug. You multiply both numbers on the warp and the weft from back of the carpet. For example 10 knots along the warp and 12 knots along the weft would give a KPSI of 120. RAJ is the number of knots on warp or weft per 7 linear centimeter. Persian rugs usually count with RAJ instead of KPSI. But for your convenience we use KPSI here.  keep in mind higher KPSI  does not necessarily mean a better quality rug. the number of kpsi is only depended on technique of the weave. Described rug condition is based upon the age of the rug.
